Daring Fireball’s John Gruber has the Verizon iPhone 4 – and he likes it, a lot

Check out his post regarding the Verizon iPhone 4. He’s had it since last Friday. The gist of it is that he likes it, Verizon’s network is superior, the call quality is leaps and bounds ahead of AT&T. The downsides are data is a tad bit slower but not by much and that you can’t be on a call and be using data at the same time. That’s already been beaten to death. He says that the Verizon iPhone will beat AT&T. I’m probably going to buy one for business purposes so I’ll be able to further test. If I do buy it I will post my results. I’m with AT&T with an iPhone 4 right now.

Steve Jobs is going to give this year’s WWDC keynote speech. Great news. Apple should release the iPhone 4.0 on that day as well. Can’t wait for this year’s WWDC, mark your calendars.

Apple iPhone OS 4.0 announcements

In about one hour, Apple is set to make an announcement on what new features will be included in their OS 4.0.

This includes features that will be added to the iPad, iPod Touch and the iPhone.

Everyone is predicting that some type of multitasking will be implemented. In its current state, the iPhone and iPad and even the iPod Touch does not have true multitasking. It does have push notifications which enable you to know what program has been updated in real time but the ability to switch between them and not have to close the program out completely has not been implemented. The main reason for this is that battery life will be drastically cut down. It appears that Apple may have found a way to preserve battery life as well as implement multitasking.

This may mean that the multitasking will be cut down and castrated to a useable version but albeit it will allow users to switch between certain apps.

We’ll see. My gut instinct is that multitasking will not make it into this cut but I’ve read people have gotten their hands on pre-release builds/betas of OS4.0 and they’ve confirmed that multitasking is indeed real.

Great news. As I played with my new toy yesterday I longed for a jailbreak. I just feel that the prices for the apps are way too expensive. I mean it’s almost to the point of being ridiculous. With a jailbreak, we’ll be able to use an entirely different store, similar to Cydia where we can download a lot of similar games and apps that will be FREE.

Unlocking and jailbreaking Apple’s iPhone 2g (first iPhone ever released)

So I have an iPhone 2g. I had the 3.0 software installed but wanted to go up to 3.1.3. due to a few programs requesting that I have 3.1 installed.

I started out the day thinking it would be quick and painless. There are a few sites out there that tell you how to do it but a lot of the info is convoluted and not explained well.

I made the mistake of restoring my phone to 3.1.3 using iTunes and then upon not finding the files necessary on my PC, trying to complete the unlock and jailbreak on my Mac. That is a big no no. Don’t do it.

I ended up having problems with the IPSW file. Apparently when you download the IPSW file to a PC, it automatically thinks the file is a .rar or .zip file. In turn, it wanted to be opened and uncompressed. You have to change the file extension. You will have to go into folder options and tell Windows to show file extensions for all files.

You can then change the extension of the IPSW file from .zip or .rar to .IPSW and that’s that.
