I uninstalled Kaspersky Internet Security 2010

Submitted by on Wednesday, 18 November 200911 Comments

I uninstalled KIS 2010 on both my home computer as well as my work bench.  2010 just hogs way too much resources.  For one, the Win 7 64-bit with 8GB of memory slowed down enough so that I felt it was no longer worth having Kaspersky on it.  Kaspersky, don’t get me wrong, is an awesome antivirus program to have and run.  It gets the job done but it isn’t doing it optimally.  It is doing exactly what Norton used to do: BOG your system down.  My system should run extremely quick, with Internet Explorer tabs opening up less than a second (which it does now with Kaspersky removed).  Instead I was waiting roughly 2-3 seconds for a tab to open.

This is not acceptable.

People on the Kaspersky forum indicated that Java plays a factor with the slow downs.  The thing is, this computer doesn’t even have Java installed.  There is no Java!  So pray tell, what might be causing this slow down?  It’s Kaspersky’s bloody software.  It’s just bloated like every other major piece of software out there today.

At least Norton got the point.  It took many years though.  It took them, I believe, almost 10 years for them to get their stuff together.

Now don’t get me wrong, up until KIS2009, it was great.  Although KIS2009 did slow my system down just a TAD.  Not enough for me to be bothered.

I just cannot have a slow system with the system specs that I have.  I want to compare this to having a great body, lifting weights, working out, but yet being confined to a wheel chair.  That’s how it feels.  You just can’t do anything with the power, strength, and massive amount of CPU cycles that are available to you.

I have been following the complaints over at the Kaspersky forum for the past few days.  I hope that they figure it out and release some type of patch.  I’d hate to have to wait until 2011 just for a new version of KIS to work out the kinks.

In the mean time, at work, I installed Microsoft’s Security Essentials.  It feels much lighter than Kaspersky, obviously, but at the same time I did feel a slight performance hit.

I also removed Kaspersky 2010. It bogged my computer down HORRIBLY, not just IE8 (like you, it took seemingly forever to open web pages) but also applications seemed to be slowed down as well. As soon as I removed it, things are SPEEDY again. Glad I didn’t pay for it! (Got it as promo for Win 7)

I’ve had the same experience. I have Windows 7 64bit running on an Asus p5n32-e sli plus with an intel core 2 duo e6700, an evga 8800gtx, 8gb ddr2 800mhz. The machine is fast. As soon as I installed Kaspersky, startup time slowed, programs had a noticable lag in opening. For example: Windows Media Center – the screen would stay black for a couple of seconds before getting to the logo screen, then when I’d try to open the music library it would take a couple of seconds to populate the album art. Shut the protection off, and all sped up. No waiting for the program or art to load. As the original poster noted, what is the sense of having a fast machine, if it is crippled by software..

Guys I have also removed KIS 2010 after using for a day. There is actually some problem with the engine itself. I have never expected this from KIS. I am using it from laste three years but moved to Microsoft security essential its fast and effective. Worth a try . In the meantime I willwait for KIS to rectify the problem….

    Specs – 4GB RAM
Graphics card – ATI HD 3450
    OS – Vista with Aero
Processor – Don,t remember but with 4MB cache

I have just installed Kaspersky 2010 after struggling with it for several weeks …
    - lengthy periods of 100% CPU activity
    - IE windows took forever to open (but not Chrome!)
    - Whole machine felt like a tortoise

I have been a Kaspersky user for over two years and fairly happy, but this 2010 release is terrible.

I am just about to go to Windows 7, so need the latest release.

    What is a good alternative?
(I will have to abandon my remaining 200 days of paid for Kaspersky licensing)

At the moment, I am trialling McAffee and it feels like I have a new computer … but I would be happy to hear other recommendations.

In all honesty, McAfee, Norton, they seem to have really listened to our feedback and made it so that their programs no longer bog our computers down.

I am using Microsoft’s Security Essentials for the time being. I do plan to go back to Kaspersky once they get their act together. I still have a year left on my subscription which was a 3-year sub.

Otherwise, try checking out Avast or NOD32. I’ve heard great things about the latter.

I just found that Buy.com are offering Mcafee IS 2010 for $11.99

    That’s a small price for a feels-like-new computer.

    Goodbye Kasperksy!

  7. Kaspersky works better than Avg or Avast antivirus. Some viruses and trojan would not be detected by AVG but they are always detected by Kaspersky.

Likewise. I was a satisfied user of Kaspersky IS for the past couple of years then installed 2010 which has rendered my computer painfully slow. I left Norton for a string of similar problems.

Have emailed Kaspersky but they have not seen fit to reply so I will be removing it and never installing again.

this post that i READ somewhere could be the solution……..

Before uninstalling kaspersky please try the following:

    1) Switch off Self Defense and unload KIS/KAV (Important!!!)
    2) Open Registry Editor
    3)Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\KasperskyLab\protected\AVP9\profiles\Scan_Qscan – 32bit Platforms ‘Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\KasperskyLab\protected\AVP9\profiles\Scan_Qscan – 64bit Platforms
    4) Change REG_DWORD values for ‘installed’ and ‘enabled’ to: 0
    5) Load KIS/KAV again and re-enable Self-Defense

NOTE: This modification will cause your Traffic Light to become yellow, and is standard behavior

I ran it will no ill affects, and many seemed happy with the fix for ‘performance drop they saw with it running’… However back up first, at least exporting the registry key before modifying the REG_DWORD. Just to be on the safe side.”

PLEASE SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE on this.

  10. I always prefer to use Kasperky over Avast or McAfee. Kaspersky is much better in detecting new viruses and it does not consume too much resources on your dektop PC.-,,
