Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) installation causing blue screen upon reboot

If you have installed SP3 onto your new HP, and are now experiencing a blue screen upon rebooting, you need to boot into safe mode by continuously hitting the F8 key upon starting your computer. Then, click on the start menu, select “Run.” Next, type in regedit and hit enter. Look for this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Intelppm\Start
Upon doing this, you need to change the hex value for “Start” from 1 to 4.
Complete these steps, restart, and you should be able to get into your computer with no more blue screen.

Not True WannaBeTech, it happened to me and I don’t have an HP or Presario, nor do I have an AMD processor. The machine is an Alienware Area 51 with XP and no Media Center. It does have a firewire interface with a mixing board with 24bit audio driver. The audio driver within the service pack 3 was not compatible causing this error.
Kmits, read Ethan’s comments. On the other hand, Blue Screen errors happen all the time. I will like to keep my comment only for that computer brand I mentioned for the sake of not arguing. A lot of people forget to search the Hp site for hotfixes.
Thanks you, worked on a pavilion a810n
Hi, Compaq Laptop. same as HP. AMD. I can’t get it to start in safe mode no matter what I try. just heads back to BSOD and reboots within seconds. so I can’t get in to mess with the registry keys.
