Allan,
I posted the Fix Again for people still having trouble Fixing the Disappearing CD/DVD drives! That same post also contains suggestions from Balty about fixing this problem if the Fix doesn't work. Please Read On!

It's obvious that you didn't notice my System Restore comment was directed to 2spoons and not to people with the disappearing CD/DVD dirves. The CD/DVD fix won't work for 2spoons problem, his/her CD/DVD drive hasn't disappeared ( CD/DVD still shows up in My Computer). For some reason it stopped reading CD's! This is a totally different problem and the Disappearing CD/DVD Fix won't work to fix this problem, thus the System Restore Comment!

Make sure to read 2spoons post, it's just above my post about doing the System Restore. Yes, geniuses can sometimes read :-)

2spoons,
You could possibly try doing a System Restore back to a Date Just Before where you first noticed the problem.

You could als try Uninstalling the CD/DVD-ROM and then Reinstall. I think you'll have beter luck with the System Restore!

i have spent the last 2 days trying to figure out why my laptop (toshiba Satellite) wont play any cd. It plays dvds fine, and has dvd drive shown in my computer. it has a cd rom drive but since a few months ago i have not been able to play any cds. i put a cd in, and it wont recodnise that there is one inserted.
i have spent the last 10 hours installing programmes to sort this out with no luck! i have tried deleting upper and lower filters, basicly tried everything.

i have reason to beleieve this all started when i installed i tunes, but have uninstalled it and still no luck.

i wondered if this makes anyone say yes that happened to me-this is how i fixed it!

many thanks!!

You must follow these directions exactly for the Fix to work:

Go to the Colored Windows Icon in the Lower Left hand Corner and click on it. When the Start Menu opens you should see the words “Start Search”. In the box where Start Search is type “REGEDIT” then hit your enter key (no quotation marks just the word regedit). Next you’ll be prompted, click on Continue. The Registry Editor will now open.

In the Registry’s Left Side of the Window you’ll see the folders:
HKEY_Class _Root
HKEY_Current_User
HKEY_Local_Machine
HKEY_Users
HKEY_Current_Config

Now in the left window go to HKEY_Local_Machine, Click on the small arrow just to the left of the words. This will open the next set of folders or sub-directory. If you will now note in the string below there is a \ in-between each set of words. Each time you see \ , you’ll need to click on a new arrow beside the correct word or words.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

I’ve broken it down for you below. 1. Click on the arrow beside HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, 2. Click on the arrow beside SYSTEM, 3. Click on the arrow beside CurrentControlSet, etc…

1.	HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
2.	SYSTEM
3.	CurrentControlSet
4.	Control
5.	Class
6.	{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

You need to click on the Folder or the String of Numbers to open the Right Hand Window, not the Arrow to the Left as you’ve been doing up until now {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. You’ll need to now look in the Right Side if the Registry Editor Window. You should now see lines that have the words Upper Filter and Lower Filter. You now need to Right Mouse Click on these lines one at a time then choose Delete. Don’t worry if both lines aren’t there, you’ll only need to Delete the one’s that are there!

If the fix doesn't work you'll need to check the things Balty listed above:
In the registry of Windows in the path I mentioned, it lists your CD-ROM/DVD drive as a 1, 2, or 3.
3 – CD-ROM (read only memory)
2 – CD-ROM RW (read Write)
1 – CD-R

I imagine 2 equals DVD( R) as well so as to be a writer (burner).

Anyway, check it and also your PC BIOS upon boot up. It may be disabled there as well.

And obviously your cables inside you PC, the drive itself, etc.

Make sure it isn’ disabled in your Windows settings under your drive properties either. You may find this setting in “Device Manager” too. It was for me after all I went through.

If all this fails, remove your CD/DVD-ROM and try it in another computer or try a new CD/DVD-ROM in your computer. This is really one of the easiest things you can do in a computer, just make sure it's turned off and unplugged before attempting it. You should also Ground yourself by touching the metal on the case (or purchase a Ground Strap)before reaching inside.

I just dealt with this problem this past weekend. I have a HP Pavililion dv9700. The last time I used my cd-rom was Jan 21. I hardly use the cd/dvd and I have yet to ust the lightscribe. Well I used the Microsoft Fix to automatically remove the filters (I never checked to see if they were there before the auto fix). The Fix was not successful because my cd/dvd was not detected. It wasn in the device manager, system info, my computer. So basically what worked for me was shutting down , taking the battery off. I had to run some errands. So I was out for about an hour or so. Came back put the battery back on, plug up my notebooks and voila...the freakin drive works and I burned a CD and then re-inserted for playback. I also uninstalled Limewire and Rhapsody before the shutdown/battery removal. Not sure what did caused my fix, but it worked for me. HTH
