Gateway MX6440 notebook modem and sound driver problem
I was working on a Gateway MX6440 series laptop and I had to do a clean install. After installing Windows I did the normal routine, try to install the drivers. I normally hit the homepage of the laptop manufacturer to get the most current and legit drivers. I found all but two drivers. The audio and the modem driver did not work.
The audio driver, come to find out, is a two step process. First you have to download the Realtek driver and then once you do that you have to download the ATI sound bridge driver. Next, the dial-up modem driver. No matter what I did I could not get the driver to load. I finally gave up and contacted Gateway’s chat tech support. The tech support agent took control of the unit and eventually went to an unofficial EMachine/Gateway website which listed all the drivers. I was then able to download a driver pack that included the modem driver. Once I did that, ran the executable, the driver installed fine. Here is the driver pack in case you need it.

Thank you!!! These drivers worked. No thanks to Gateway.
FlatBouncer >>the sound driver found in this pack doesn’t work on the 6226b
The solution is to use the XP driver for the Gateway MX6918b, MX6211b, MX6921b, MX6215b, MX6922b, MX6923b or MX6926b. All use the same sound driver ‘SigmaTel_Audio_5_10_4889_0′. This works on my ML622b -as does everything else. Hope that this helps, even if rather late in the day.
Nick
BTW, I have put a complete set of the XP drivers required, beyond a standard XP installation at http://rs416.rapidshare.com/files/299442164/ML6226b_XP_Drivers.zip
Was wondering, have any of you had problems with loading linux Ubuntu on this machine? I have an actiontec modem and Ubuntu finds it but can not connect… any help would be dandy.
Im Glad i found this site. Thank you for the driver pack. This is a life saver. Please dont delete this as it helps lots of Gateway MX6440 users.
Downloading the pack and installing it now
PLEASE DOWNLOAD THE DEVICEDOCTOR SOFTWARE FROM THE WEBSITE. GOOGLE IT. IT’S A FREEWARE AND SCANS ALL THE DRIVER YOU NEED, PLUS LETS YOU DOWNLOAD IT FROM ITS FAST SERVER LIKE THE FILEHIPPO!
THANK YOU!!!! After a good three hours of blue screens and altering INF files, I finally hear something from the speakers. I am fixing this ‘puter for a friend and did a full install of XP (a tiny version, if you will) and all drivers are a go less the PCI issue that I’ll tackle later. As for this computer running Linux, I had to get the files that were to be saved from formatting via Puppy Linux to a USB. Puppy is BLAZING fast and can be ran from a live CD with ease. Ubuntu might be a little graphics heavy for this old beast, but it never hurts to try-I actually am interested on how this thing would handle Xubuntu since it is the smaller, yet faster, twin brother to Ubuntu. I know everyone is upset about the driver/Gateway fiasco, but all in all this computer is a lot better than most I see that are four and five years old. The HP I just shelled out $1K for has a much flimsier keyboard and a barely there latch. Maybe these old geezers aren’t so bad. Nah…you’re right. Get a Mac. KIDDING!! Good luck, daddy-o.
my friend has a gateway mx6215b. A heavy vase fell on it and now it won’t start up. It wont’ even load bios. He reset bios by replacing the jumper. He removed the hd and is using it in another laptop. He is also using the powercord in the other laptop. So the hd and the powercord are good. Can you give me any other reasons why this laptop will not start up?
