For those of you out there who are looking for a great antivirus at a cheap cost (free), you’ve come to the right place.  AOL is currently offering Active Virus Shield which is basically a slimmed down version of Kaspersky.  Kaspersky is the number one antivirus at finding the most pieces of viruses right now.  It beats out McAfee and Norton.  It also beats out others like AVG and Avast.  I’ve completely switched from installing Avast for clients to installing AVS.  AVS is ten times better, the interface is much more intuitive and obviously, it finds a lot more stuff than Avast and the other free antiviruses do.

Look no further, visit http://www.activevirusshield.com/.  What you will need to do is go through with the sign up process.  You will need to provide a valid e-mail address in which the “key” is sent to and you can then download the program/install file and install it.  Once you install it it will ask you if you want to install the “security toolbar.”  DON’T DO IT.  You do not have to and it is more of a nuisance than anything.

Next, it will ask you to activate it.  You can then retrieve the key from your e-mail account and input it here.  Reboot your computer and you should be good to go.

Be warned though, this is still not an end all be all product.  Like with any other layer of security it is just that, a layer of protection.  You still need to be sure to always update your computer using Microsoft Update.  Also make sure you have some type of spyware/adware protection.  I recommend AVG anti-spyware, Spy Sweeper 5.2 or Spyware Doctor.
