Dell to scale back on promoting bare-bones systems aka cheap systems

Dell plans to revamp their sales strategy.  Dell currently sells insanely cheap computer systems, most often than not including a CRT monitor as well for around $299-$499 including shipping.  It seems that customers are getting upset at the pricing.  Being that a $299-$499 computer won’t fetch you much, it’s obvious that these computers that Dell is selling are mediocre at best.  Mediocre meaning Intel Celeron, 256MB of memory, onboard video + sound, just the most minimalist stuff you can think of.

I guess customers are getting upset that after trying to add a tad bit more memory, or a slightly faster processor such as a Pentium 4, the price starts to rise, really quick.

I don’t blame them for being upset but at the same time, you get what you pay for.  Dell was the king in cheap computers.  They undercut everyone, including other big time manufactures like HP and Sony.

Let’s see what they have in store for all of us as consumers.  I hope it’s only good, and nothing dire.

Sony to offer movies with memory sticks

I was reading over at DailyTech and Engadget and noticed they both have an article about Sony moving away from the UMD format and going ahead and letting people use their memory sticks to store movies.  According to the articles that I read, Sony will start selling memory sticks and a DVD with four movies in a package deal.  You will be able to unlock one DVD and transfer it to your memory stick to play on your PSP.

If people can come up with some way to circumvent the “unlocking” process and be able to transfer as many DVDs as they want to any memory stick, then this could be something big.

Yes, I know that there are homebrew applications and hacks out there but this is something that Sony is legitimizing.

Shipping to Hawaii

You know what annoys the crap out of me? Shipping to Hawaii. For those of you, probably the majority, shipping to your house from anywhere in the continental USA is a breeze. You order something online, qualify for free shipping, receive your item a few days later. For us here in Hawaii, it’s an entirely different story. We are not eligible for any type of free shipping except for a few select places. My biggest gripe is with Newegg.com. Yes, their prices were and sometimes still are unbeatable but, shipping is a huge concern of mine. I mean, try buying a case from them and living in Hawaii, there goes $150.00 on 2nd day air via UPS! That is insane! $150.00 for shipping on a case! I mean yes, I know you have to go over massive amounts of ocean to get here but still, that is just way too expensive. If only there was some type of underwater tunnel in which packages could be shipped to and from. Just like how there are fiber optics spanning from Hawaii to Japan and then on to California. Now that would be something. I can dream, can’t I?

You’re probably thinking, LOL, you live in Hawaii for goodness sakes! Who cares about computers, who cares about shipping, you have beautiful beaches, beautiful scenery and yes beautiful men and woman. Well first of all, if you lived here your entire life, 24 years, you will eventually get bored of the scenery, bored of the pointless things to do and yes even bored of the eye candy. Then you move on to things like hobbies which interest and entertain you. My hobbies, computers. I’m just random ranting hence my blog’s title, Random Fix. Hope you’re all having a great day and take care of yourselves.
